Child Support
& Extraordinary Expenses

Child Support is mandated by the Child Support Guidelines, which are are legislated both provincially and federally. Despite their name, the Guidelines are binding in most instances.

Child support follows the payor's income and the residential arrangement of the child(ren) and is generally paid monthly. For example, If a child lives primarily with Parent A, then Parent B will pay monthly child support to Parent A. If a child lives equally (or close to equally) with both parents, then a set-off amount may be payable instead.

Many children also have "special or extraordinary expenses". These can include health and dental,  orthodontic, tuition, or extracurricular expenses. What is and is not included in these expenses can be difficult to sort out and are not necessarily the same for all families.
